Join Maestra Viajar as she travels the world

I am Brooke McKenzie of Mililani, Hawaii, and then Olympia and Tacoma, Washington, and now I am an expat international teacher, living in China and epically traveling this big wide world.

I got a later start to the world traveling gig, at 49. Amidst incredible heartbreak, and soul searching, my mom told me that I had been given the tremendous gift to live my own life, and I should go live it. So I thought about what I always wanted to do, and it was travel.

“You’ve been given the tremendous gift to live your own life, so go live it.” — Linda Ouye

So I pulled up my bootstraps, as we say in America, downsized almost everything that I own, packed a few bags, and moved to China, without ever setting foot in that land. I live my life with aplomb and with a attitude that I have nothing to lose and everything to gain and that every single day is a magnificent adventure.

I hope you will join me on my travels of the world where you too can realize that you can get out and enjoy our big, beautiful planet. I have literally made friends on the street in many far away destinations and most days, I thank my lucky stars that I have this tremendous privilege of dreaming and then doing.

With great heartbreak, I am estranged from my wonderful, caring, empathetic, quirky, magnificent son, if you see him in the world, Liel Quinn Guthrie, tell him I said hello and I love him always. And one of these days we can begin our adventures — again.
